The Design
The design of the 6-Week NYSL TV Pilot Workshop is to not only help you. develop your script, but to develop you into a truly self-sufficient writer. Rather than serving up a cookie-cutter formula, our goal is to equip you with a solid grasp of the fundamentals of screenwriting, so when you get that next idea for a TV show, you won’t need another class.
By fundamentals we don’t mean what is most basic, but what is most essential. The principles, tools and techniques you’ll come back to time and time again, as you bring out the best versions of your stories. Both the ones you’ll bring into the workshop, and those to come in the future.
What you’ll learn
Over the course of the 6-week workshop you will be guided step-by-step by a professional TV writer as you turn your seed idea for a TV show into the pilot script of that show. Some key skills you’ll learn along the way are:
How to build out the world of your show and fill it with strong story engines.
How to create compelling, multi-dimensional characters that we'll want to watch season after season.
How to construct engaging stories, and find the ones that best launch your show.
The crucial yet often overlooked craft of outlining.
How to structure scenes to deliver their maximum dramatic/comedic punch.
The art of writing visually.
How to write dialogue that crackles with authenticity and avoids cliché.
Best practices for getting your work into the world once it’s done.
And much, much more…
BY THE END
By the end of the 6-week workshop you’ll emerge with a solid outline for your pilot script… A good chunk of that script written.... And a solid strategy for getting it into the world once it’s finished.
And you’ll have the knowledge and skills to be able to turn the next idea for a TV show that visits you into a pilot, without needing another class.
*You will also be eligible to take part in The LAB, should you care to finish your script under the guidance of your instructor.
