Dylan Gary is the founder and head instructor at the New York Screenwriter's Lab, and has been a working screenwriter for over 15 years. Some highlights of his career include working on the writing staff of HBO's critically-acclaimed drama TELL ME YOU LOVE ME, receiving a coveted "blind pilot" deal from Sony Television and adapting a popular British TV show for American audiences (also for Sony). Dylan's original pilot, BEHIND THE SUN, was commissioned by The Sundance Channel as part of their 2014 TV development slate. His limited-series RANDOM (co-created with Kim Farrant) was optioned by London-based Warp Films (THIS IS ENGLAND,THE LAST PANTHERS, '71) and is currently being developed into a feature film.

Also on the film side, Dylan was hired to adapt novel into a film by Olive Productions (Steve Buscemi, Stanley Tucci, Wren Arthur), and his original screenplay SOUTH OF HOPE is currently being shopped.

In November of 2022, Dylan turned his eye toward directing. And his short film THE UNIFORM (starring Jammie Patton, cinematography by Jeff Hutchens) is in final prep for its festival run.

Dylan has also provided script consultation services for a wide array of production companies, management houses, producers, writers and directors…including Screen Siren Films, Garlin Pictures, The Radmin Company and many others.

As a teacher, Dylan's primary focus is to cultivate and nurture each student's unique voice as a writer. And while he believes there are principles of screenplay construction that every writer should know, Dylan does not take a cookie-cutter approach in his teaching. Rather he works with every student to structure their ideas in a way that best brings out the essence of the story they are compelled to tell.  Most of all, Dylan genuinely cares about his students and the projects that bring them to his classes. And that care is evidenced by both the honesty and encouragement in his teaching.
